How to Apply Makeup
If you’re new to makeup, the variety of products and tools might seem overwhelming but don’t worry. This guide will walk you through each step. Once you get the hang of it, the makeup application will feel effortless.
Part 1: Preparing Your Face
1. Remove Any Old Makeup. Always start with a clean face. Remove any makeup you have on, whether leftover from the previous night or earlier in the day. Use a makeup remover or mild baby oil to ensure your skin is free from residues. Keep in mind that you should always remove your makeup at the end of the day to prevent clogged pores and other skin issues.
2.Wash Your Face, Then Follow With Moisturizer. Cleanse your face with a mild facial cleanser to remove dirt and bacteria. Spend about one minute massaging to remove dead skin cells. After rinsing with cool water, apply a facial moisturizer suitable for your skin type. This step ensures your skin is hydrated and ready for makeup.
3. Prime Your Face. Apply a face primer to ensure your makeup stays on longer and looks smoother. Use your fingers to spread a small amount evenly over your face, providing a good base for the rest of your makeup. Priming helps to create a more even complexion and increases the longevity of your makeup.
4. Put on a Coat of Foundation. Foundation creates an even base for the rest of your makeup. Use a foundation brush or a damp beauty sponge to apply foundation that matches your skin tone. Make sure to blend it well into your neck and earlobes to avoid visible lines. Choose a foundation that matches your natural skin tone for a flawless look.
5. Apply Some Concealer. Concealer helps to even out skin tone, hide blemishes, or brighten areas like under your eyes. Use a brush or clean fingertips to apply it in areas such as the center of your forehead, chin, and under-eye area. Blend it seamlessly into your foundation for a natural look.
6. Set Your Foundation and Concealer. This step helps your makeup last longer. Use a damp beauty sponge to apply loose setting powder under your eyes to prevent creasing. Use a large, fluffy brush to cover your whole face with translucent powder, which also removes any shine.
7. Apply a Highlighter. Highlighter adds brightness and depth to your face. Apply it to the tops of your cheekbones, the center of your cupid's bow, and the inside corners of your eyes to achieve an illuminating effect. You can also create a ‘3’ shape from your cheekbones to your forehead for a more dramatic highlight.
9.Apply a Little Blush. Blush restores a natural flush to your face. Apply it to the apples of your cheeks, using a large brush. Don't apply too much—just enough to restore color to your face and enhance your overall look.
10. Fill In Your Eyebrows. Filling in your eyebrows can define and frame your face. Choose a brow pencil, powder, or pomade that matches your natural hair color. Use light, small strokes to outline the edges of your brows, then fill in the center. Set with a clear or tinted brow gel to keep your brows in place.
Part 2: Adding Your Eye Makeup
1. Apply an Eyeshadow Primer. Eyeshadow primer helps prevent creasing and makes your eyeshadow last longer. Use your fingertip to apply the primer from your lash line to your crease, then set it with a light powder. This provides a smooth base for blending eyeshadows.
2. Put on Your Eyeshadow. Start with a base color on your eyelid, blending it into the crease. You can add a darker shade to the outer corners for depth and dimension. Finish with a light shimmer on the inner corners for a bright, open-eyed look.
3. Apply Your Eyeliner. Eyeliner defines your eyes and creates the illusion of a fuller lash line. Line your upper lash line first, and if desired, add some eyeliner to your bottom lash line for a more dramatic effect. Use a pencil for a smudgy look, or liquid eyeliner for a precise line. If you want extra flair, wing the eyeliner at the outer corner for a cat-eye effect.
4. Finish Off With Mascara. Mascara helps your lashes stand out. Apply it in upward strokes, starting from the inner corner of your eyes and working outwards. Apply a coat to both the top and bottom lashes if you like. Avoid over-layering mascara to prevent clumps and achieve a natural finish.
Part 3: Adding Color to Your Lips
1. Smooth Out Your Lips. Apply lip balm to keep your lips soft and hydrated. This step also ensures that your lip color goes on smoothly and lasts longer throughout the day.
2. Apply Lip Liner. Lip liner helps define the shape of your lips and prevents lipstick from feathering. Line your lips with a liner that matches your lipstick shade. You can also fill in your lips with liner to create a more long-lasting base.
3.Apply Lipstick or Lip Gloss. Choose a lipstick or gloss in your preferred shade and apply it to your lips, starting from the center and blending outwards. If you want a neat finish, you can use a lip brush or apply the lipstick directly from the tube. To keep lipstick from smearing, press your index finger into your mouth, remove it, and check for any excess color.
4. Finish Off Your Look. After finishing your lips, check your makeup in the mirror for any smudges or imperfections. Use a makeup remover-soaked Q-tip to fix any mistakes. To lock everything in place, apply a setting spray, holding it about 8–12 inches away from your face and spritzing 4-5 times.
Tips:
- The amount and type of makeup you wear depend entirely on your preferences. Makeup is about experimentation, so try different styles to see what works best for you.
- When testing foundation, try it on your neck or chest rather than your hand to find the most accurate match with your skin tone.
- For a more dramatic look, you can add darker eyeshadow to your crease to make your eyes appear larger and more defined.
